Why Physiotherapy Often Works as Well as Surgery for Joint Pain
When joint pain appears, surgery can sometimes seem like the quickest solution.
However, many common musculoskeletal conditions respond very well to rehabilitation and structured exercise.
Physiotherapy focuses on restoring strength, mobility, and the body’s ability to tolerate load. As muscles become stronger and tissues adapt, pain often improves and function returns.
Interestingly, many people commit fully to rehabilitation after surgery, even though similar improvements may have occurred with physiotherapy alone.
This doesn’t mean surgery is never necessary. In certain situations it plays an important role.
But for many knee, shoulder, and back problems, the most powerful treatment is often rebuilding strength and capacity rather than fixing a structural finding on a scan.
