Do MRI Scans Really Explain Knee Pain?

featureImg
When knee pain appears, many people assume something must be torn or damaged. An MRI scan is often ordered to find the cause.

MRI scans frequently show findings such as meniscus tears or cartilage changes, particularly in people over 40. The surprising part is that many of these findings are also present in people who have no knee pain at all.

But the results can be misleading.

In other words, what appears on a scan may simply reflect normal age-related changes rather than the true cause of symptoms.

Pain often develops when the knee loses its ability to tolerate load. Reduced strength, lower activity levels, or sudden increases in training can all contribute.

For many people, the most effective treatment is not surgery but restoring capacity — improving strength, mobility, and gradual tolerance to movement.

Imaging can be useful in some situations, but a scan alone rarely tells the whole story.
